Pharmacy software is a long-term decision — your staff will use it every working hour for years. Before you buy any system, including ours, ask these seven questions.
1. Does it track batches and expiry dates?
This is non-negotiable. A system that only counts quantities cannot warn you before medicines expire, and expired stock is pure loss. Ask to see the expiry alert screen in a live demo.
2. How fast is a normal sale?
Count the keystrokes. A busy pharmacy cannot afford ten clicks per sale. With barcode scanning, a sale should take under thirty seconds including payment.
3. Does it show profit, not just sales?
Sales numbers flatter you; profit numbers inform you. The system must track purchase prices per batch so it can tell you real margin per item, per day, and per month.
4. What happens when the power cuts?
Ask specifically: does it run offline? Where is the data stored? How often are backups made, and where do they go? You want automatic daily backups at minimum.
5. Can it handle credit customers?
Most Afghan pharmacies serve regular customers on credit. The software should track balances and print statements — otherwise you are back to the notebook.
6. Who answers when something breaks?
Software without local support is a trap. Ask who answers the phone, in what language, and how fast. Ask an existing customer, not the salesperson.
7. Can it grow with you?
If you open a second branch, can the system handle central purchasing and consolidated reports? Migrating to new software later is far more painful than choosing scalable software now.
Whatever system you evaluate, insist on a live demo with your own products and your own workflow. A good vendor will welcome it.
